Hazel Park film studio debuts web series with Detroit small business consulting and events company

A partnership between a Hazel Park-based film studio and Detroit entrepreneur Jennyfer Crawford has debuted the first episode of its new online video series highlighting Detroit-area entrepreneurs. The web series "All Things Detroit Conversations" debuted on Wednesday, March 14.

Reel Clever Films produced the series, which features conversations between Crawford and local small business owners. The first episode features Megan Cowan of Finch Finery.

The "Conversations" comes out of Crawford's small business consulting and events company, Ask Jennyfer, which organizes the All Things Detroit events at Eastern Market. It's a natural outgrowth of the original business, as each are meant to showcase and promote the area's small businesses. All Things Detroit events provide vendor space to local entrepreneurs, along with food trucks, performances, and other attractions.

For Reel Clever Films co-founder Eden Sabolboro, the partnership between the two companies is a perfect fit. Eden says that Crawford was one of the first people to respond and support Reel Clever following Eden and co-owner Thaad Sabolboro first moving to Michigan from the Philippines in 2014.

"Whenever I meet someone here, they always have the most interesting stories, stories of people starting from scratch. And Jennyfer's one of them," Eden says. "That resilience and grit, it's a sense of attitude here. That's what I want to highlight in Jennyfer's film series."

There are currently six episodes scheduled for the first season of the web series. Planned conversations include the owners of Delectabowl, Detroit Girls Rock, Tealing & Co., and Zayna Bakes.

"All Things Detroit Conversations" is available on Jennyfer's website and on YouTube.

Farmington Chamber commissions promo videos


With new members joining and retention climbing, the Greater Farmington Area Chamber of Commerce ended 2015 with momentum.

Now chamber staffers believe they’ve found a way to build on that momentum.

The chamber Board of Directors has unanimously approved a plan formed by Executive Director Dan Irvin to film four promotional videos over the next few months that will highlight all the things the Farmington community has to offer.

Oxford Twp. ought to be in pictures

Searching for the perfect location to shoot a movie?

Look no further than scenic Oxford Township, tucked away in northeastern Oakland County.

Whether it’s a big-budget Hollywood blockbuster or a small, quirky independent film, Oxford offers a diverse assortment of settings.

That assortment includes gravel pits, picturesque horse farms, classic homes built in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, a historic downtown, more than 500 acres of park land, crystal-clear lakes in every direction, bountiful wildlife, a variety of nature trails, old churches, modern subdivisions and thousands of acres of open space.

"We’ve got it all," said Jack Curtis, chairman of the township’s Economic Development Subcommittee (EDSC). "Whether a movie is set in the past, present or future, whether it takes place on the moon or in small town USA, we can accommodate it right here. We want to become the film industry’s home away from Hollywood."

Oxford has already served as a movie location on more than one occasion.

Part of the 2011 movie "Real Steel," starring Hugh Jackman, was filmed in one of the American Aggregates gravel pits.
In 2010, part of the Lifetime Television movie "Close Quarters" was shot on the 1,200-acre Koenig Sand & Gravel property located along Lakeville Rd.

"We’re definitely on the hunt to have more movie magic happen here in Oxford," said EDSC Member Todd Bell. "It’s exciting for the town, it’s good for business and it’s fun."

Because Oxford isn’t part of some sprawling urban area, it can offer film production companies two extremely valuable benefits – privacy and security.

"We’re kind of off the beaten path up here," said EDSC Member Ed Hunwick. "It’s a lot easier to keep something under wraps here than in the middle of Detroit. There are plenty of places to film that are shielded from prying eyes."

Actors and film crews certainly won’t starve in Oxford as the community is home to at least 20 restaurants, many of which offer relaxing bars and casual atmospheres.

"We’ve got steaks, barbecue, European bistro fare, Asian dishes, American classics, gourmet sandwiches, bar food – you name it, we’ve got it," Curtis said. "A number of our eateries offer catering services, so it’s absolutely no problem for them to deliver food right to the set."

Oxford is also home to a myriad of licensed builders, electricians, plumbers, landscapers, etc. who bring a wealth of expertise and experience to every project.

"If something needs to be built for a movie, we have plenty of local talent available," Bell said. "They’re reliable, they’re based in town and they’re eager to get the job done with a high degree of quality and professionalism."

Anyone interested in filming a movie in Oxford is encouraged to contact township Supervisor William Dunn for assistance and guidance.

"If you need information on which properties are available for shooting, the types of permits that might be necessary or how to contract for extra security using our police force, Mr. Dunn is the person to talk to," Curtis said.

Oxford Township is home to 20,526 residents (including Oxford Village) and experienced the third highest population growth (28.2 percent) in Oakland County based on the 2010 U.S. Census. Its diverse business community ranges from a revitalized downtown district to a healthy manufacturing sector. For two straight years, the village was recognized by a University of Michigan-Dearborn study as one of the top communities in the state when it comes to fostering economic development and entrepreneurial growth.

Oxford is served by a full-time, professional fire department, which currently holds the record for the fastest cardiac care time in the county.

Oxford Community Schools is the first public school district in Michigan to receive PreK-12 authorization from the International Baccalaureate organization.

Michigan-based MJR building $16M theater in Troy

Oak Park-based MJR Digital Cinemas is opening its next theater in Troy, creating jobs and drawing an estimated 800,000 visitors annually to the spot that will also introduce a new concept in movie-watching.

The MJR Troy Grand Digital Cinema 16 will be located at the corner of Maple and Livernois roads and house 16 screens and 3,200 seats.

Ground will be broken on the 74,000-square-foot facility in September, and  opening day is expected by late April 2014.

The $16-million project will also dedicate one of its theaters to the MJR Epic Experience, a new concept that focuses on designing a theater around extra comfort and a higher level of customer service. The 460-seat theater will have a larger screen and larger, overstuffed leather seats with more space between seats. The Epic Experience Theater will also come with the MJR Studio Bar & Lounge.

“Troy has great demographics and is the perfect community in which to build a brand new and truly state of the art facility,” MJR CEO and founder Michael Mihalich says.
The Troy Grand will be MJR's ninth theater in southeast Michigan.

“The city of Troy is so proud to partner with MJR in transforming the Maple Road-Livernois corner into a first-class entertainment destination,” Mayor Dane Slater says.

Growing Moonlink Studios' opens production space in Southfield, Ann Arbor

Moonlink Studios, a provider of production and satellite services in Michigan, has opened two new stages in metro Detroit where live shoots can be done and productions can be recorded.

The expansion of the company, which also rents recording and production equipment and staff, opens doors for metro Detroiters who have been learning production and film industry skills - even as cuts to the state's tax incentives have led to uncertainty in the industry.

One of Moonlink's new stages is in Southfield and was the site of ESPN's sports analyst Jalen Rose's basketball analysis during the London Olympics. The other stage is in Ann Arbor  is located at Domino's Farm office Park and has been used by CNN International and CNBC networks already.

The two new stages bring the company's total number of stages to five. The other three, in Warren, Troy and Detroit, can all be used for live shots or recorded productions.

Moonlink, based in Oak Park, was formed when RingSide Creative Integrated Media Studio and Jeff Moon Production Services Inc. went into partnership last year. Read the metromode story here. Through the partnership the companies became the largest single source provider of start-to-finish production and satellite services in Michigan.

Moonlink rents stages, crew and equipment, including cameras and satellite trucks that cover the Midwest and Eastern half of the country.
